| RAS "Early Looks" - Week 3 - Three Plays |
Virginia at North Carolina (-3) - 9:00am Pacific - Game #111-112
First year coach Butch Davis has already began the transformation process at North Carolina. There are visible improvements in preparation, play-calling, special teams, and overall team attitude from previous years. The Tar Heels played well as well as anyone could have expected last week in a hostile environment at East Carolina. The young team fought back twice in the second half from touchdown deficits to tie the score. The game was not decided until a last second field goal by ECU that followed a botched fake field goal attempt by UNC. Redshirt freshman TJ Yates has the look of a reliable ACC caliber quarterback despite his lack of seasoning. Yates completed 20 of 32 for 344 yards and 3 touchdowns in his first career road start. The Carolina defense is young but active. They blew some key secondary assignments that led to big plays vs ECU but the unit should show improvement with added experience. Playing in front in of a large home crowd will give this entire team a big lift. Virginia is struggling offensively right now. QB Jameel Sewell has not been 100% since offseason wrist surgery on his throwing hand and has been largely ineffective thus far. True freshman Peter Lalich had a solid game passing in place of Sewell last week vs Duke. This leaves Virginia stuck between a rock and a hard place as they get ready for their ACC opener. Do they play the experienced but ineffective Sewell or a true freshman on the road? Opponents will not be losing sleep over either option right now. Virginia gained just 100 yards vs Wyoming and just 324 vs lowly Duke while converting just 8 of 27 3rd down conversions combined in the two games. The Cavs are now 2-10 ATS on the road under Groh since 2005. Look for Butch Davis to win his first ACC home game in style. Give the points.

Ohio State (-3.5) at Washington - 12:30pm Pacific - Game #143-144
For the past two years, Ohio State's first test of the season came vs Texas, but this year they get to drop down in class to be tested at Washington. These Buckeyes are not as dominant as the 2006 version but still have plenty of talent and depth to be a top ten team. The defense has already started to shine as they held Akron to just 69 total yards and just two first downs last week. The offense appears to still be a work in progress but has likely been sandbagging some in the early going. With the available personnel they are more than capable of producing enough points for a win and cover here. Washington is coming off two big wins to start the season, first winning at Syracuse, and last week upsetting a ranked Boise State team at home. They are in uncharted territory now and this could potentially be a letdown spot for them. The win over Boise State was a bit misleading, Boise actually had more total yards but their inexperienced skill position players failed to execute six times inside the Husky 30 yard line. Redshirt freshman QB Jake Locker is a good one but he is still mistake prone. Facing the Ohio State defense in his third career start is a tall order. After scoring 24 first half points, Washington went scoreless in the second half after Boise made some adjustments. On defense Washington has been getting away with a makeshift secondary with a true freshman starting at one cornerback spot due to injuries and defections. Washington head coach Ty Willingham still has a long ways to go with this program before they are competitive at this level. Ohio State is 7-2 ATS in road games since 2005. The Buckeyes have an edge in coaching and talent here. Give the points.

Wyoming (+13.5) at Boise State - 5:00pm Pacific - Game #177-178
I had hoped to see +14 here but will not pass up an opportunity on Wyoming as a double digit dog. The Cowboys have done everything right so far this season. They have a balanced offense and solid defense. They flat out dominated Virginia in their season opener, even more so than the final score indicates, and last week notched a 14 point win over Utah State. Wyoming gets both BYU and TCU at home this year which means this is the last game on their schedule that they will be not be either favored or a mild underdog to win. It could be a dream season for them. Wyoming actually had more total yardage than Boise in last year's meeting but a 61 yard interception return for a touchdown was the deciding factor in a 17-10 final. In the game Wyoming held Boise to a season low 246 total yards and 3.2ypc. The two teams met last year before Wyoming QB Karsten Sween took over the starting job and they are 7-2 with him as a starter going back to last year. While Wyoming has improved, Boise has clearly digressed. The Broncos lost their QB and top four receivers from last year, as well as a slew of players on defense. They failed to make enough plays last week against a very suspect Washington secondary leading to their first loss in fifteen games. With their win streak snapped and dreams of another BCS bid all but over, Boise could be in a letdown situation this week. Either way they are in for a competitive battle from the Cowboys. Take the points.
